Turn on the TV Barack is campaigning in Europe...
I got a text today from a good friend of mine who voted for Bush last election saying, "Watch Barack speak in Berlin." Barack? Is this a mutual friend of ours? Oh, the Presidential candidate, Barack Obama. Is he still running against John? Have him and Hillary made up yet?
It's pretty interesting to talk to her this election cycle. She is a relatively conservative girl, that voted for Bush in 2004 and has really bought into the ideas of "hope" and "change" that Barack Obama is pushing this year. She went to see him speak in Miami and to hear her talk about him you would think he was one of the "Two Coreys" and she was 14 again, reading "Tiger Beat" magazine. It's as cute as it is nauseating, but the passion is real. She believes in Barack Obama.
I flipped the speech on, it was on every news channel and the first thing I asked myself was, "why is Barack Obama in Europe giving speeches and talking to dignitaries?" Did I miss something? Has he been elected President yet? Why is he giving speeches as if he is America's leader?
If I was an adviser of a Presidential candidate that clearly has problems with middle America I don't think I would be telling him to jet off to Europe and giving campaign speeches. (Transcript here)
Do the Euro's love him? Yes, of course they do, they hate President Bush and all his policies, they see Christians and middle America as a bunch of backward hillbilly rubes praying to a big wizard in the sky. These are the people that look down on America and when we elected our last President their headlines read "how could 59,064,087 people be so dumb."
If I am advising Obama I send him to Berlin, Pennsylvania not Berlin, Germany. He needs to be connecting with middle Americans not people around the globe.
Look, this is a great "energizing the base moment" for Obama, his supporters will take this speech and this moment and tell us how great it is to see an American politician respected oversees, instead of being routinely mocked (see above). But, will talking about being a"citizen of the world" play with those in the middle?
No.
