Bud Cramer: Blue Dog Lap Dog...

August 3rd the I posted:
Bud Cramer: Conservative Blue Dog or Pelosi's Lap Dog...
I asked if Cramer was as conservative as he and State Senator Parker Griffith would have you believe he is.
A lot has been made about State Senator Parker Griffith being the heir apparent to Representative Bud Cramer's conservative "Blue Dog" label in North Alabama. Well, if Griffith wants to use Cramer as an ally in his election battle against Wayne Parker he may want to tell Cramer to stop proving that "Blue Dog Democrats" still vote with "Nancy Pelosi Democrats" 93% of the time.
Well, Flashpointblog.com has done the legwork and the analysis to drive the point home in a post titled, "Bud Cramer: From Blue Dog to Lap Dog."
Since the Democrats took control of Congress in 2007 Cramer has voted with his party a shocking 90% of the time - 10% more than when he almost got voted out of office. See how his “independence” shifts with the political winds in Washington in the figure below.

Visit the link and read more here.

Brian points out the changes in Cramer's voting record as power in Congress shifted from Democrats to Republicans and proves this "Blue Dog" label is nothing more than a marketing ploy.

And until now, a very effective marketing ploy.

The reality is that Bud Cramer is only 1/435th of the vote. Because he has voted with the Democratic majority, he has been able to obtain several high-ranking committee placements. That has paid off in a big way for the Valley. We need clout in Washington more than we need a conservative vote, and Cramer has delivered.

That is an argument that I have heard numerous times, but the reality is neither of these guys is gonna have any clout on day 1. For you to make the argument Parker Griffith is gonna get it easier than Wayne Parker means the Democrats will hold power for many, many years. We don't know that.

Yeah, I'm not raising the issue in support of either candidate. I'm just not sure it makes sense to blast Cramer. If he has shifted with the political winds, he's done so to increase his political influence. We have been the beneficiaries. Unless Parker Griffith stays in until he's 83, or Wayne Parker is sharper than he seems to be, our political clout is about to take a dive.
