I always find it amusing when government tries to come in and protect an ignorant populace from themselves. Whether it's alcohol, cigarettes, or in this case fast food the reason is always the same - "WE know better."

In Alabama we have blue laws, smoking bans that are creeping their way into Huntsville and Decatur so get ready for the next step, food restrictions. New York already has "
trans fat bans" and
requirements for the caloric content of Big Macs to be posted on menus, while Los Angeles is working towards a
ban a new restaurants is South L.A.
Why South L.A.?
In April, the county Department of Public Health released a study showing that 30% of South Los Angeles adults were obese, compared with about 21% of adults countywide. South L.A. also has the highest incidence of diabetes in the county, 11.7% compared with 8.1% for the county as a whole.
Simple question - how does this plan of limiting new restaurants address any of this? The people there are already fat, the restaurants there are already open. Wouldn't the city be better served if the knuckleheads on the city council focused on improving parks services or recreational areas instead of trying to define what constitutes a fast food joint? Of course they would, but then they would have to tell their victim-constituents that the reason that are fat loads is because they are lazy and don't care. Below is the photo of those poor people being target by "pervasive junk food advertising."

That's right, see that lady in the blue, she would be a size 6 if it wasn't for that "El
Pollo Loco" or the "
KFC" invading her city with tasty tacos (I assume) and "a blend of mouth-watering
KFC flavors and textures all layered together. We start with our signature mashed potatoes layered with sweet kernel corn and loaded with bite-size pieces of crispy chicken. Then we top with our
homestyle white pepper gravy and sprinkle with our shredded three cheese blend. For the final touch, we tuck a buttermilk biscuit in the side." Delicious. But I am sure she has no clue that eating gravy, fried chicken and a buttermilk biscuit regularly is probably not a healthy way to sustain herself. If only the government would step in and do something.
The officials trying to stop more Burger Kings and
Arbys from killing their constituents cite this stat, "30% of South Los Angeles adults were obese." That stat sounds eerily familiar to this one:
Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee lead the nation when it comes to obesity, a new government survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday, with 30 percent of their residents overweight.

In Alabama we already saw a legislator try to
push more PE in school, because kids are not very active, and he got smacked down. We need to become a more active society and unfortunately we are moving the other way. Teaching personal responsibility and getting kids to exercise would have been a good start. What we don't need is New York and L.A. style plans that don't work anyway.
